Let's be Square!

Ok, I know Instagram makes square format the new kid on the block again! So there you go I hear ya "another old school vintage style snapshot taken from a smartphone". Well yes and no... Yes some photos here have that so called instagram feel, not that I have anything against instagram. Mind you, it's always fun to fool around with effect and filters. Instagram bends and transforms the reality as we can see it with our naked eyes, it conveys some nostalgia to otherwise bland and raw images.

In that album, the emotions and the end result specially here once scanned and displayed on the internet are pretty similar (well save this beautiful buttery grain !)   - but the photography experience is much more empowering. These photos were taken with a 1970s middle Format Twin Lens Reflex Mamiya film camera. No worries, I'm going to spare you all the technical jargon, but take one photo and you'll love it! You might get your audience bored to death though, as it can take some time to measure your light (a smartphone is your best friend), to find the best angle from that stunning but awkward horizontally inverted and yet massive waist level viewfinder, rewind the film (because you always forget to check it and once you finally ready to trigger the shutter and found that perfect angle you need to turn upside down the camera to twist the wind crank), focus your subject, deal with parallax (remember the twin lens!)...so make sure to have everything ready and your composition set before you ask your subject to jump in...unless you want to ruin your friendship. It takes time and patieeeeeeence, so chill out !

Oh and yeah, you only have 12 shots and no safety net to control the framing or your exposition after the shot! So it might be worth to control once more your setting, and pay extra attention to your composition.... But thats where the fun starts :  it's always a particular moment when you hear the shutter triggers, you know you have captured a precious instant.  It makes for great moments, believe me!
